Buyer’s Guide to Choosing Food Barrier Bags

Barrier bags help protect and present baked goods, confectionery, snacks and other food products. Insinc’s range includes clear compostable NatureFlex bags, polypropylene plastic bags, micro-perforated bags and self-seal packaging in numerous sizes and thicknesses.

Options include flat and gusseted formats for products ranging from cookies and cake slices to pies, bread rolls, croissants and French sticks. Most barrier bags are supplied in cartons of 1,000.

Compostable NatureFlex or Polypropylene Bags?

NatureFlex and wood-pulp barrier bags provide a clear compostable packaging option in standard and gusseted sizes. Compostability depends on the product’s certification and whether an appropriate composting facility accepts the packaging.

Polypropylene bags provide a conventional plastic option and are available in 30-micron and thicker 50-micron formats. The thicker option may be preferred when additional bag strength is required. Polypropylene is not the same as compostable NatureFlex and should be disposed of through the appropriate local waste stream.

Which Size and Format Should You Choose?

Flat bags suit slim or evenly shaped products, while gusseted bags expand to hold thicker items such as rolls, croissants and packaged baked goods. Purpose-sized NatureFlex options are available for cookies, pies, cake slices, French sticks and several types of bread rolls.

Micro-perforated bags are available for products such as pies, cobs and French sticks, while self-seal polypropylene bags in A4, A5 and A6 sizes provide a closable format. Check the bag’s width, length, gusset depth and micron thickness against your product before ordering.
